Residents who represent many different ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds call the community home, including those who are African-American, Hispanic, Hmong and European-American. Havenwoods is home to more than 250 businesses providing residents with job opportunities. In 2004, a Business Improvement District was formed to make an annual financial contribution to the betterment and increased vitality of the Havenwoods neighborhood. In addition, Havenwoods Economic Development Corporation (HEDC) is a non-profit organization established in 2002 with the purpose of revitalizing the city's far northwest side. Heavily supported by the Business Improvement District, its mission is to enable and promote the creation of family supporting jobs in a thriving live-work community by increasing home ownership and playing a significant role in increasing the quality of life for the Havenwoods neighborhood. In greatpart as a result of HEDC's efforts, the community currently benefits from significant investment and job creation by national retailers such as Starbucks, Culver's Burger and Custard Stand, Popeye's Chicken, and McDonald's; however, Havenwoods also provides an ideal setting for many local and unique entrepreneurial restaurants and retail outlets.
Several local organizations also work to keep Havenwoods thriving, including Silver Spring Neighborhood Center, the Kaul Area Neighborhood Development Organization (KANDO), and the Havenwoods Business Council. These groups have formed a unique partnership with local residents, business owners, government officials and other stakeholders. In 1998, an extensive revitalization plan was launched to invite new businesses and home owners into the community and to ensure that Havenwoods offers its residents a haven in the city.
